100 weken project
Eén project springt er voor mij uit omdat het duidelijk maakt hoe makkelijk we de wereld een beetje beter kunnen maken. Voor maar een paar centen. In het 100 weken project op Rusinga Island (in het Victoriameer) krijgen weduwen en alleenstaande moeders elke week 1000 shilling. Dat stelt ze in staat om de armoedecyclus te doorbreken: de kinderen naar school (en naar de dokter als het moet), hun huis op orde brengen, een 'kitchen garden' inrichten en iets van een bedrijfje starten. Als je niks hebt zijn dit enorme barrières. Met 1000 shilling in de week lukt het wel. Die 1000 shilling is iets van € 6-7, de prijs van twee kopjes koffie op het station of bij de Shell.

100 Weeks Project
One project stands out for me because it shows clearly how easily we can make the world a little better. For just a few cents. In the 100 Weeks Project on Rusinga Island (in Lake Victoria), widows and single mothers receive 1000 shillings every week. This enables them to break the cycle of poverty: sending their children to school (and to the doctor when needed), getting their home in order, setting up a kitchen garden, and starting some kind of small business. If you have nothing, these are enormous barriers. With 1000 shillings a week, it becomes possible. That 1000 shillings is about € 6-7, the price of two cups of coffee at the station or at the Shell station.
