Sealdah Station, Calcutta
Het was mijn eerste reis voor Net4kids, naar India en Nepal. Tussen bezoeken aan meisjeshuizen in Calcutta door vraagt projectleider Sister Cyril of we meewillen op de dagelijkse ronde naar Sealdah Station — groot, heet, chaotisch, overvol. De schoolmeisjes zoeken er dakloze vrouwen op om ze van eten te voorzien. Met mijn camera voor de neus blijft er altijd een soort afstand tot wat ik zie. Maar die middag is aan de man met de hamer niet te ontkomen, het grijpt me ongelofelijk aan: vrouwen in vervuilde hoeken, nauwelijks bezittingen, het eten overduidelijk welkom. Pas achteraf besef ik wat me het meest schokte: hoe normaal de meisjes het allemaal vonden.

It was my first trip for Net4kids, to India and Nepal. Between visits to girls' homes in Calcutta, project leader Sister Cyril asks if we want to join the daily round to Sealdah Station — big, hot, chaotic, overcrowded. The schoolgirls seek out homeless women there to provide them with food. With my camera in front of my face, there's always a kind of distance from what I see. But that afternoon there's no escaping the gut punch — it hits me hard: women in filthy corners, hardly any possessions, the food clearly welcome. Only afterwards do I realise what shocked me most: how normal the girls seemed to find it all.
